New Music: Ed Valdette – Tightened Up the Noose

For all the drama of the title and the gothic noir metaphors of the lyrics, Tightened Up the Noose by Ed Valdette is post-punk with a happy ending.

Looking at how trauma can pass down generations, and how we may need the love of another to break that cycle, and for us to find a peaceful place within us, a part of ourselves that we may be afraid to search for on our own.

The helter-skelter pacing of the melody occasionally drops into moments of serenity, possibly a hint of what’s to come, but also a perfect framing for Valdette’s vocals, a cross between David Sylvian and Bryan Ferry, romantic but with hints of danger and froideur.

Reveals Valdette about the lyrics, “I never expected to run the other way when I finally found real love – but that’s exactly what happened. I met my now-wife and panicked, watching myself freeze from the inside out.”

“This song tells the story of how she (thankfully) literally chased me down the street, and how I struggled with real intimacy following a fear of marriage after my parents’ divorce.”
