New Music: Fleur bleu·e – Surrender

With their Question Marked Upon The World LP set for release next month, Fleur bleu·e have dropped a video for album track Surrender.

The song – and album – came at a formative time for band members Delphine and Vlad as it found its shape when they relocated from Paris, France, to smalltown Pennsylvania. And maybe that explains the unsettling yet dreamlike duality that gives the song its unique spirit.

Fleur bleu·e have made reference to Twin Peaks when talking about their mindset when recording the album, and maybe that has come into play in the confection of candyfloss and confusion within the song. At times, Delphine lends it a 1960s girl-group pop sensibility, innocent and ingénue-like, but the lyrics hint at a darkness that is left for the listener to fill it for themselves, drawing you into the song’s web in an absorbing and uncertain way.

“It is an attempt to understand something ineffable, invisible, incomprehensible, and inexplicable,” Delphine says of the album. “It is what we’ve come to call the ‘question marked upon the world.’”

She adds about the song, “Surrender is about the eternal wait for love. It can last a lifetime if you don’t surrender. The song has a double meaning: it’s both a plea for the other to lower their walls – ‘I’ve been waiting for surrender again’ – and the realization that I must surrender my own desire in order to become whole.”
