New Music: FOOLSPRING – Thistle
The three themes within Thistle find their origin in the 90s, though it’s what FOOLSPRING does with them that is so special.
The London-based band looks largely to the shoegaze and dreampop genres on Thistle, more towards Cocteau Twins than My Bloody Valentine, in great part down to the vocals’ shimmering, soaring presence. They gift that melodic and wistful sound to the listener via a production that has strong trip-hop textures, giving the track a cinematic clarity that is unusual in shoegaze, setting FOOLSPRING apart from their peers.
The band has stated that Thistle looks at “the quiet war of being your own worst enemy.” They continue, “It explores the weight of self-doubt, isolation and the haunting belief of being a parasitic burden to those around you. Thistle captures the suffering that blooms within and the struggle to break free from it.”
