New Music: Frog – SPANISH ARMADA VAR. XV

Frog’s latest album, THE COUNT, isn’t named after someone who loves to count, but a mysterious man known to appears at bars the band frequent.

Brothers Daniel and Steve Bateman continue their idiosyncratic and adventurous approach to Frog’s music on the LP, releasing variations on songs such as SPANISH ARMADA. They break down their music to the point where it sounds like broken indie rock and alt-country that has been reassembled with a lot of love and more than a little hope.

This works because Frog aren’t afraid to take risks, and it’s a testament to the band that here, they give us something that has a frail charm about it, exploring how humdrum personal pain can sometimes be.
