New Music: Gasher the 14th of Greenskull x Lunafacious – Hekate

As pitches go, “If witch house is dead, play this at its funeral” is a strong one, but this collab has the music to match that verbal muscle.

Gasher is known for their role as a member of the alienist anti-commercialist collective Clash Clash Bang Bang, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Hekate doesn’t conform to the modern confines of witch house. And when working with Lunafacious, that becomes ever more evident in how the track plays about with expectations.

If anything, it has more in common with the early work of fellow Germans Mater Suspiria Vision, dark and dense, finding a place for itself between the occult of Psychic TV and dark sci-fi textures that de-rez the 80s unreality of Perturbator. If you’re looking for Blade Runner influences, then this is 2049 if anything – dislocating and primal, for all its technology.

The vocals are whispered, almost wordless apart from the occasional reference to the title. The goddess Hekate was associated with ghosts, the underworld, and of course witchcraft, and I’m certain that Gasher and Lunafacious successfully invoked her intervention here.

Hekate is out now and streaming on Bandcamp and Spotify: head to Instagram for more info on the track, as well as on Gasher and Lunafacious.
