New Music: Ghost Fetish – Someone

Though Power, Corruption & Lies is hailed as one of the great albums of the 80s, its influence on modern music isn’t always noted.

It’s to that album that Seattle’s Ghost Fetish look to frame their own approach to post-punk. They look not just to the slow-moving synths and haunting bass lines for added atmosphere, but also to how New Order used slower tempos and harnessed the vocals to act as an instrument.

And like New Order’s music of that time, Someone has an existential quality to it. When New Order were looking for a way forward, so are Ghost Fetish; the song’s narrator is trying to find themselves in uncertain times, knowing love will help them survive if only they can find their way through an uncertain present.
