New Music: Hockitay – over/over

The lightly-coloured electronic and folky flavours of over/over bring modern sounds together with a classic voice.

It’s hard to believe Hockitay is so young, because judging from his lyrics and vocal style, his soul has a maturity to it that comes through strongly in his performance. Listening to over/over, I can’t help but think of the ethereal nature of Tim Buckley and the indefinable grace of Jeff Buckley – a heady mix for sure.

Hearing the song for the first time was like hearing the hum of electricity in overhead wires. It has an alien, soothing quality to it, and there may be danger, but there is beauty in its isolation and sense of retreat, a quiet power that is intangible but oh-so present.

Hockitay has said that he approaches his music with a tactile, visual sensibility, and that’s true of the song; for as much as that intangible presence exists, the images it creates seem so vivid, so real, that you want to reach out and touch them.
