Introducing: Tertia

Currently based in Ireland, British singer/songwriter/producer Tertia caught our attention when we got a preview listen to her new single not so long ago. Normal Stuff is out now, and we caught up with the artist to learn more about her music – and her love for Grimes as a musician and inspiration.

First up, could you tell us a bit about Tertia?

I am a singer/ songwriter and producer from southwest London, currently based in Dublin for uni. Music has always been a huge part of my life and but releasing music on my own has been a relatively recent affair. Last year I released my debut project, Tertia’s Mixtape which was an awesome (if a bit terrifying) experience, but it was received really well so I’ve been hesitant to release anything I’m not 101% happy with since.

What inspires you to write?

My friendships, my family antics, my relationships as well as of course films, books, and of course music. Recently though, I’ve been trying to take the headphones off more and dial down the content consumption. There is SO much crazy shit happening all around us and it’s just as fascinating a lot of the time.

Who has had the most influence on your music?

This is REALLY difficult, but I’d have to say Grimes. Ever since I was 13 my sisters were telling me about her, and it was really important for me to have a female producer/ creator to look up to who isn’t your typical airbrushed pop star. Grimes breaks all the rules and I love that about her – always have.

It’s hard to find the confidence to learn music production from scratch when people are always trying to make decisions for you and direct you to the nearest man with the huge, intimidating studio. Grimes is a reminder that there is no one way of doing things and music production is not a man’s world.

How did it feel getting back in front of a live audience late last year?

Insane. During the pandemic, the way I created and performed music changed so much so it was just crazy getting back into the live scene. Everyone’s been so hungry for big crowds and big basslines, and I’ve really enjoyed being able to deliver that.

What was the last album or song you listened to?

I’ve been obsessing over Fontaines D.C.’s new single Jackie Down the Line.

If you could support anyone, who would it be and why?

SAULT. They just keep releasing incredible music with lyrics that MATTER. Powerful lyricism, awesome music, and a female lead. Wouldn’t mind being associated with them.

What other bands or musicians do we need to be checking out right now?

I recently came across an awesome band called Dog in Confusion. They are very under the radar, but I love their sound and energy.

What’s the inspiration behind the lyrics of Normal Stuff?

Normal Stuff is about the frustration of comparing myself to someone who is very stable, content, and oh so normal. Sometimes really grounded people can make me feel the exact opposite – I guess that’s where the song is coming from.
