New Music: Jodie Langford – I See Only Red

Hull’s Jodie Langford and producer/collaborator Endoflevelbaddie push their electropunk sound to the outer reaches on the nightmare-inspired I See Only Red.

Sleep paralysis is quite frightening, made even worse by the fact that while you might appear to others as being blissfully in slumber, inside you are a broiling mass of terror and turmoil.

Langford and Endoflevelbaddie bring that to the surface, and pair it with a production that dances between punk and DNB without restraint. Langford retains her punk presence, the emotion in her vocals escalating as the lyrics delve ever deeper into her unbound subconscious. Don’t fall asleep listening to I See Only Red.

Says Longford about the expressive and at times emotionally graphic lyrics, “I See Only Red had been wallowing in a folder for a while, not sure of the direction we should go in with it. The song has a very personal aspect to it lyrically and had gone through a few different iterations before arriving at this final version, which has the perfect level of energy and drama that we’ve been looking for.”

She continues, “It encapsulates the endless times I have been haunted by sleep paralysis. I’ve often woken up to a lifeless body, unable to move, speak or scream, combined with the sensation that something horrible and otherworldly is lurking over me.”

“On occasions the room has turned blood red, and I’ve felt like I’ve been dragged down the side of my bed. Or, I’ve seen shadow-like figures in the crevices of my room.”

“When it happens, I feel this force trying to pull me back into a slumber; however, I fear that if I fall back to sleep, I will die, and so I just try to keep calm and stay awake. Sometimes I have to get into bed with my mum because of how terrified I am, which is a bit embarrassing to admit to at 25 years old…”
