New Music: Julianna Barwick – Open Master
American experimental electronic musician and producer Julianna Barwick has teamed up with Moog Music to introduce the Moog Sound Studio. Alongside artists such as Bonobo and Martial Canterel, she’s created music for a Soundcloud-exclusive EP, Explorations in Analog Synthesis. You can listen to Open Master below.
Open Master sees Barwick use the new semi-modular synthesizer (read about it on Music Radar) to construct genre-defying electronic music piece that has a haunting tone. Warm and timeless, rhythmic and calming, at times ambient but full of energetic resonances from sounds as diverse as Early Music and Silver Apples. So much packed into just over five minutes, yet it feels too short, such is its powerful sound and brooding presence.
The Explorations in Analog Synthesis EP also features music from Ela Minus, Dan Deacon, Peter Cottontale, and artist/activist Madame Gandhi. This September, Barwick is touring the UK with dates in Manchester, London, and Glasgow lined up – ticket details can be found on Barwick’s website, or Twitter and Facebook pages.
