New Music: L’ESPIRAL – Mr. Babylon

There’s no mistaking the influence of 60s and 90s British rock on Mr. Babylon, but it’s all pulled with so much panache by L’ESPIRAL that you’ll find yourself feeling renewed.

A taster for their upcoming album “SQUAWK!”, cried Love, it is bookended by the bluesy riffs of The Rolling Stones and the blissed-out beats of Primal Scream, perfect for singing along to.

Vocalist Zoë Bleu has a shimmering presence with – yes, more 60s references in Jane Birkin and a youthful Marianne Faithfull – innocent and knowing as the lyrics require. Pour yourself a JD neat, listen, and relax.

Bleu discloses about the lyrics: “Mr. Babylon is about a woman mourning lost love and finding that, beyond the death of a relationship, her memories live on in the dream worlds she has built inside herself. The song reflects that, even in love’s afterlife, life continues to bloom in silent and unexpected ways.”
