New Music: Luna Ivy – Batteries not Included

San Francisco trio Luna Ivy deck shoegaze in some rough and ready finery on Batteries not Included.

The band, comprising Lees Akard on vocals and guitar, Bex Castillo on drums, and Nick Pedro on guitar, dive headlong into a murky and moody place between grunge, alt-rock, and shoegaze, full of fire and fuzz.

It has moments of tranquillity, where the drums and guitars appear to be suspended in air, fragile and isolated, before all three descend into distortion and feedback. The vocals, however, remain serene throughout. Can music exist in some liminal place between Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine? Well, Luna Ivy have proved just that.
