New Music: Midniter – Sugar Man

Gary Numan meets glam rock on the delightfully wicked video for Midniter’s latest single, Sugar Man.

The glam side is anthemic in a Muse/Suede way and, in keeping with the song’s title, sugar sweet. Midniter’s vocals continue that leitmotif, inviting you to join him on a trip to the Candyman, offering so much promise, but all the while, the track occasionally hints at the downsides. The sharp, icy steel of the synths intermittently punctures the reverie, as if letting you know that reality is only being held at bay and will have its day, sooner or later.    

States Midniter, aka North Carolina musician Nic Pugh, about the lyrics, “Whether it’s drugs, booze, your phone, or literal sugar, it’s about being sold the things that kill us every day, and how we eagerly accept them in most cases. This song was inspired by my addictive personality, Velvet Underground’s Waiting for the Man, and Jeff Bezos.”

He continues, “I liked the idea of making Sugar Man a character, attempting to personify a manipulative corporation, or the gaudy excess of capitalism. Remember, kids: your drug dealer is your best friend. Consume! Consume!”
