New Music: Minute Taker – Alone

With the release of his new album, The Oblivion, Minute Taker continues the accompanying video-story cycle with Alone.

Minute Taker – musician Ben McGarvey – places his musical roots in artists like Kate Bush, Depeche Mode, and A-ha, but Alone has echoes of the celebratory and defiant nature of Bronski Beat’s The Age of Consent album.

The lyrics of Alone aren’t political but personal, while continuing The Oblivion’s cinematic themes, lyrically and sonically, with McGarvey’s vocals certainly being at their most vulnerable within the setting of the album. You don’t need to be aware of its overall concept to fully enjoy the song, but it finds itself truly at home in its tales of escapism, identity, addiction, and the search for meaning in a world without boundaries.

“Alone represents a sense of peace and fulfilment in the moment,” says McGarvey. “Rather than seeking adventure, excitement and euphoria from the night, it’s about the simple enjoyment of wandering the streets – enjoying the solitude and a sense of connectedness with both my surroundings and my core self.”
