New Music: Modern Diet – Trouble

Trouble is anything but, instead being a wonderfully enticing morsel from the new Modern Diet album, Cloud Breaker.

Brooklyn-based Modern Diet, an indie rock outfit helmed by songwriter and producer Jake Cheriff, finds itself immersed in two well-defined periods of New York music history. Trouble has a flavour of the laid-back hedonism of The Velvet Underground, slightly lo-fi with a hint of power pop, a real Sunday morning/afternoon vibe.

Cheriff imbues that with the scrappy street indie sounds of New York, distilling shades of The Strokes and The Walkmen into a primal DIY essence that is both charming and DIY in nature. The lyrics reflect on topics like “sex appeal of self-destruction and the cosmic pull toward the unsustainable,” says the band, and the arrangement reads like a perfect vehicle for that, raw and expressive.
