Dutch singer Nina June is gearing up for the release of her new album by releasing a taster in the form of new single Out To Sea. She says the track is inspired by a myth called “Sealskin”. (Selkies to us Celts!) and is the result of a 700 mile solitary walk through France and Spain, listening to the music of Thomas Newman, Michael Nyman (The Piano), Rhye and Zero7.
Out To Sea was certainly worth that effort and is a promising opener for the upcoming album. In keeping with the inspiration for the lyrics, there’s a folkish nuance to the vocals, as the arrangement hangs heavy with anticipation and longing, like a storm hanging just on the horizon.
Cascading like a soft and tender rain when it arrives, the track actually aches with a sense of release from longing, whilst still expressing the pain that brings.
Out To Sea is from Nina June’s upcoming BON VOYAGE album, which will be released 23rd of March via Ostereo. There will be an official launch party for the album at Amsterdam’s Paradiso club on 25th March – you can find out more here.
