New Music: Northern Gloom – never enough

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, outfit Northern Gloom make a riveting racket on their latest single, the acerbic never enough.

Northern Gloom – Brian Doherty on drums, Cory Paternoster on bass, and Michael James Stipe on guitar and vocals – draw from the 80s and 90s for never enough, but it’s not obvious or easy in how it gets there.

You can pick up faint undertones of Joy Division and Nirvana in the rumbling bass and visceral nihilism of the vocals, sure. But its gothic-infused power rock sits better with the dark anthems of Killing Joke and Paradise Lost, possessing a shadowy propulsive quality that is as energising as it is unnerving in its raw emotiveness. The band has commented about “releasing a song a month for eternity,” and if they sound like this, I’m here for that.
