It’s time for another of our irregular series Notes from The North, a mini-roundup of releases we really want you to hear, or we’re just loving a lot right now!

DÄÄCHT – Maybe Later

A fantastic cut from the German band’s recently released Crying Houses album, Maybe Later finds DÄÄCHT shaking us out of any potential slumber with its wild mix of garage, grunge, and proto-punk. It’s not subtle, but it’s a whole lot of loud fun!

Sisters – Sweetness Of Things

Liverpool-based Anglo-American outfit Sisters have an amazing confident and accomplished sound on their debut single, Sweetness Of Things. It occasionally has a shoegaze feel, but the song sits nicely between the pristine sheen of Pale Waves and the darker moments of Wolf Alice. That’s a good place to be!

The Mary Wallopers – The Juice

Dundalk’s The Mary Wallopers are at the forefront of politicised popular music in Ireland, and in that context, you can look at The Juice as a folk/rock counterpoint to CMAT’s EURO-COUNTRY. The message is much the same, but here, traditional Irish music has an infusion of rock and punk aesthetics.

Kingfishr – Killeagh

Two folk songs in one article? I’m feeling a bit homesick, I guess. Killeagh by Kingfishr is only a few months old but has quickly become part of the Irish Songbook. The story behind the song is part of what makes it so wonderful: written by friends, for friends, yet finding itself quickly adopted as a universal expression of community in Ireland and beyond.
