New Music: partygirl – birdspotting

Describing yourselves as “brooklyn maximalist rock n roll” is a heck of a calling card, but birdspotting by partygirl is certainly that – and beyond.

It’s a hard track to make sense of, so it’s best to just not try and instead go along for the ride. I got so much from birdspotting: from the soft rock of the intro, it speeds through and mixes up No Wave, Art Blakey, Rocky Horror, pomp rock, riot grrrl, and Mannequin Pussy, all rounded off with an unexpectedly sophisticated take on what is essentially hardcore.

It takes a lot of confidence, and more importantly, a lot of talent, to pull off something so eclectic and complex while keeping it contextualised within one coherent piece of music, but boy have partygirl done that!
