New Music: Peak Flow – Repetition

Based in Doncaster in the UK, dark rock outfit Peak Flow explore the nature of not progressing in a relationship on Repetition.

They cleverly use recurring motifs in the arrangement, often in the synths and guitar hooks, to counter the forward movement of the lyrics, drawing the song’s narrator unwillingly back to the starting point, realising that they have not quite found a path forward.

With the anxiety growing throughout the song, the way in which the song loops back to the beginning is emotionally and sonically effective, the fade-out working brilliantly when the track is on repeat. It’s like being there in the middle of the conversation; it slowly subsides without resolution before the cycle begins again, progress at a glacial stage.

“[Repetition] captures a relationship stuck in the same unresolved argument,” reveals the duo about a track that will appeal to fans of Soft Kill. “Circling, repeating, neither side prepared to give. The tension doesn’t explode; it lingers quietly unresolved, more out of exhaustion than understanding.”
