New Music: Sable – Björk

Berlin-based Sable brings a leftfield dancefloor sensibility to some very Fleetwood Mac moments on Björk.

Sable – originally from Manchester in the UK – has an unnerving vocal similarity to a youthful Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush, and deserves a lot of credit for establishing her own sound and vision with Björk.

And despite the track’s title, it bears little resemblance to the work of the legendary Icelandic artist. Instead, she acts as a springboard for Sable’s creativity via a cascade of memories that in turn lead to moments of clarity and self-actualisation. That’s a lot to pack into a pop song, but Sable does so with such style and passion, it makes for a very singular and vivid listening experience. 

“So many of us internalise the idea that we need to mould our passions and our personalities around someone else in order to be worthy of love,” says Sable about the song.

“It’s the result of capitalism creating a world in which we feel insecure, so that we consume more and buy more, so that we remain small and isolated. This is a song for anyone who has looked back and realised that they didn’t need to change. In fact, to be loved is to be known, and the first step is to know yourself deeply.”
