New Music: Sulka – Halloween

Horror-themed shoegaze wasn’t something I’d ever considered before hearing Halloween by Sulka, but it’s a concept that could easily grow on me.

Sulka – aka Glasgow-based musician and producer Lukas Clasen – was picked up by the iconic and individualistic Lost Map Records, and it’s easy to understand why. So much about the vocals, guitars, and synths shimmer, shoegaze and folk intertwining – but the lyrics and spoken word samples – well, they’re something different.

Sulka samples but also references Donnie Darko at points in the song, so that even when you feel wrapped in a Slowdive-meets-Swiss-Portrait style cocoon of comfort, feelings of nostalgia slowly replaced by a sense of foreboding.
