New Music: sundayclub – Nuclear Fallout

It’s hard to highlight one song from sundayclub’s Bannatyne EP, simply because they’re all so damn good.

Nuclear Fallout is probably my favourite though, due to the way the song plays with the expectations of dream pop and shoegaze. It’s unusual for the genre to express so much emotional pain, so much discord under a seemingly placid veneer, even though the vocals hint at the turmoil and damage detailed in the lyrics. Get ready to be heartbroken.

“A love story on the verge of implosion, Nuclear Fallout is our newest portrait of emotional self-destruction,” says the band. “Used more as an adjective than a noun, the word ‘nuclear’ describes a toxic chain reaction of insecurity, one leading to a continuous and seemingly cyclical, yet irreversible end.”

“The track unfolds almost like a familiar countdown to detonation, predictable and shocking all at the same time. Weaving doomsday imagery and undertones into a sonic portrayal of love and self-love turned catastrophic, the track is both a raw confessional and a chilling metaphor for the kind of emotional warfare that oozes vulnerability and uncertainty.”
