New Music: The Guilt – Our Feline House

Our Feline House is good, possibly not-so-clean party fun from Malmö-based electro-punk outfit The Guilt.

The track serves as a party anthem for the disaffected, offering a journey through feminist and queer music from the 1970s onwards. Right from the opening bars, the vocals marry the punky intensity of Poly Styrene to the electroclash/riot grrrl dazzle of Le Tigre’s debut LP.

Along the way, the leftfield rock of The B-52’s lurks behind the party energy of the lyrics, and like that band’s best music, Our Feline House sets itself up as a ‘fuck it, let’s party’ anthem, a declaration of pride and chosen family, and a statement of exuberant defiance at a time when minorities are increasingly made to feel at risk.

The duo says about the song, “Our Feline House started with the subject of cats, then friends, then came the party. It all became wrapped up in the feeling of ‘our house, our rules,’ because the world can suck without us. We can’t control everything, but we can take care of each other.”
