New Music: Tiberius – Sitting

Lo-fi in nature but bursting with emotion, Sitting is one of the standout tracks on Troubadour, the new album from Tiberius.

Helmed by Brendan Wright, the Boston-based, non-binary-led group isn’t averse to taking from the stark and confessional side of grunge, expressing that through understated shades of indie and alt-country on Sitting.

With sudden and short outbreaks of awkward half-laughter interrupting the flow of the vocals at points, it’s obvious that these are lyrics that have been lived, not just written – an insight into the innermost workings of a person at a time of profound and sudden change. Troubadour is a remarkable album, definitely one for fans of Courtney Barnett, MJ Lenderman, and Audio Antihero labelmates Frog.

“For most of my life, I defined myself almost completely on who I was in relation to others – my friends, my family, and my relationships,” says Wright. “Troubadour was written in a short period of time where these relationships changed significantly, and it felt as if I underwent complete ego death.”

“For months, I felt insane but inevitably found solace in nature and the constancy of the trees. For a period, I felt utterly connected to the universe in a way that was completely outside my sense of self. I was everything all at once, and it was one of the most profound experiences I’ve ever had. And it was hard. And I think I was lucky enough to capture it in these 10 tracks.”

Troubadour is out now in digital and cassette formats on Bandcamp. The album can be heard on all major digital platforms, including Spotify and YouTube Music – hit up Tiberius on their Facebook and Instagram socials for details.
