Track By Track: Callis – Sex Yoga
The Calder Valley punches above its weight in terms of quality indie and alt rock. Todmorden-based Callis are prime movers in the area’s music scene, so we asked band members Dean, Bryn, and Tyler to give us the lowdown on their new Sex Yoga EP.
Think Joy Division jamming with Radiohead, that’s just a glimpse of what you can hear over the EP’s four Gordon Raphael (known for his stellar work with The Strokes) produced tracks.

Greenish Meat
Greenish Meat is a song about the ubiquitous ignorance towards the ethics of meat production. The idea of being blissfully unaware of the morality behind eating meat. I feel like there were no rules in the creation of this song. It’s mad.
Lemonade Renegade
It’s an ode to the 90’s grunge scene. Lyrically, it’s thinking about yourself, both negatively and positively, too much, which is a luxury of the modern world. I started ruminating when a lot of things changed in my life such as relationships, fall outs with friends and family grief. Then I gave my head a wobble and wrote this song.
Dream Sequence
The idea behind Dream Sequence was inspired by bands such as Bauhaus, The Cure and New Order. Written at a similar time to Lemonade Renegade, almost a prequel. My mind drifting off to better places when things turned sour. A very cool bassline and a huge chorus.
Godfrey
Godfrey is a story about the retired policeman, Alan Godfrey, who reported an unidentified flying object over West Yorkshire in 1980. We oscillated pedals in the outro for an extra-terrestrial effect. Gordon Raphael also added in the distorted radio messages (his actual voice – we didn’t know until it was mixed).
Sex Yoga is out now and streaming on all major music platforms including YouTube Music, Apple Music, and Spotify. For other listening options and upcoming releases and live appearances by the trio, be sure to follow them on their Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook socials.
