I won’t spoil 620 by revealing too much about the EP, other than to say if you like the darker end of futurepop and synthpop, then you’ll love its driving, futuristic sound. Big thanks to Sehseiyah for this breakdown of its four songs.

Paranoid

Paranoid is about being sucked into thoughts of everyone leaving you and your world falling apart but not being sure if those inner voices are your own. It’s about separating anxious thought patterns from reality and building up the will to live through whatever comes your way.

A part of me is expressing how desperate I am to get out of my head and the chorus ending with “am I still paranoid?” is a direct reflection of how badly I want to rip through the suffocating cocoon of my own brain. Paranoid sets the tone for the “run through the forest at night as the final girl away from the killer” experience of the EP.

Cross My Heart

This song came about one night when I was in my head feeling overly critical of any and everything about my romantic relationship and feeling so terrible because I couldn’t figure out why I was thinking and responding to our love the way that I was.

It’s a reflection on how the more I love someone, the more I have constant terror in my mind and imagination that something bad will happen to them. At the same time, this sometimes causes me to want to reject people’s gestures of love towards me because I’m afraid that if I let someone too deep into my heart, these intrusive thoughts of losing them will magnify along with the connection.

This song poses the question of whether or not being this guarded with your heart means that you’re living an inauthentic lie as yourself.

In Cross My Heart, I’m expressing desires to keep my emotions and the people I’ve reserved them for somewhere far away hidden safe from the pain and cruelty of this world. In that distant space, I want to feel safe expressing that love and for once, genuinely receive that love and the gestures that come with it right back.

Out of Body

The verses in Out of Body are narrated through the perspective of a personified intrusive thought who tries to convince me to self-cannibalize and give in to its wishes to destroy me under a “promise” that it’ll free me from suffering.

In the chorus, I regain consciousness and resist the grip of this parasitic thought by expressing that I still have real, tangible love(s) in my life to live for.  “I live in your head” recited in this track is me and the parasite having a wires-of-thought crossed moment before the breakthrough moment.

Raising Hell

Raising Hell is the wakeup call moment where you realize that the “killer” chasing you through the woods is actually yourself. It’s a come-to- realization moment that you were holding the knife to your own throat this entire time. It’s about looking inward and confronting unwanted thoughts of hurting people around me and how these blips of interrupted visuals in my head cause me so much stress in my life.

If music is a spell, all the magic and intention of this EP as a whole is fully concentrated in this track. Because here I’m saying that instead of looking at the metaphorical knife in your hand as something that causes harm, look to it as a source of power and a symbol of something that keeps you moving through the world.
