New Music: Zoon – I Was Younger

Ahead of the release of their Happy Thought School album, Zoon has shared the dream-state pop of I Was Younger.

Zoon – Toronto-based songwriter, composer, and activist Zoongide’ewin (Daniel Monkman) – has teamed up with Chris Chu of indie outfit The Morning Benders on the song, which might be why the track has a fragile and crystalline guitar presence under the ethereal and slow-moving vocals and synths.

And maybe it also contributes to the intangible sadness of I Was Younger: Zoon has spoken about it reflecting on “the dissolution of love” and how they “wanted heartbreak to feel soft around the edges.”

But I can’t help thinking that something else is at play. Love brings much more with it than just itself, and so too does its loss. A shared part of ourselves goes too; that feeling of the track mourning its loss gives the song its breaking heart.

Happy Thought School is out on the 19th of June via Paper Bag Records and is up for pre-order on Bandcamp. Got to say, the clear/orange splatter vinyl looks good enough to eat! For streaming and pre-save news, check out Zoon on Facebook or Instagram.
