About the tracks
I approached this a little bit like “If you wanted to know what I’m about, this is the playlist”.
I grew up as a raver. Breakbeat culture and the sounds adjacent, related and influenced by it continued even when rave ebbed. The infectious energy, the delicious fecundity of ideas and, frankly, “stealing shit from everywhere if it worked” bled into almost all modern, popular musical genres… and I was absolutely there for it.
This is the music I listened to from early teens to, well, later teens, when “DeathBoy” became a thing (see: Torn Apart was literally the track that made me create a band that wasn’t just techno, but guitars and shouting and all the emotion that brings).
These are songs I’d cue up to listen to while putting on my makeup for a night out on the town, and also for when we got back to share a sofa with my buddies for a bit of stoned Nintendo before the day concluded.
The artists inspired me with the ways they combined all the things I loved: basslines, breakbeats, evocative lyrics. Sometimes furious, sometimes reflective, lots of them with a bias toward a future we were not quite in yet.
Every one of these tracks has made an impact on me. Brought me joy to listen to, and made my neurons fire, or sometimes just made me want to scream.
I hope the journey is enjoyable, or at least an interesting listen. ;-)
