New Music: Life Aquatic Band – Underwater Highway

Sheffield’s Life Aquatic Band has produced a concept album with a difference – you can read more about that below. Released on the 17th of February, it contains some real gems, including the delightful Underwater Highway.

The band, initially formed as a songwriting experiment by singer/songwriter Ben Allen and producer Jonny Poole, serves up a song which makes several references in the lyrics to Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles work with Wings. Musically it’s a very different affair from his pop/rock fusion of the 70s.

It tends more to the art-rock and experimental sounds of the era, Roxy Music and pre-electronic Kraftwerk, immediately coming to mind. The song shares with those artists an outward, engaging quality designed to draw the listener in and keep you wrapped up in the sensual, Krautrock-meets-psych tribute to a musical legend.

This is what the had to say about the concept behind the track and album: “Paul McCartney has been on the run since the acclaimed Wings album ‘Band on the Run’ in 1973, and we are Life Aquatic Band Police Department, determined to catch the villain.”

Life Aquatic Band’s LP, L.A.B.P.D (or Band on the Run), is available to stream or download on all major platforms, including Spotify. Be sure to check the band out over on Facebook and Twitter, give them a like or two so you can keep up with news about the group, other listening options, upcoming gigs, and more.
