New Music: Inventions – Outlook for the Future

Matthew Robert Cooper of Eluvium and Mark T. Smith of Explosions in the Sky are the creative forces behind Inventions. Preceding the release of their Continuous Portrait LP via Temporary Residence Ltd, they’ve dropped Outlook for the Future to give us a tantalising idea of what is in store.

As free-flowing as it is eclectic, I’ve not heard anything quite like this for a while. The light tones to the flute solo and the brushed feel of the percussion make a virtue of repetition and rhythm, due to the warm, reassuring sensations they engender. Where there is light, there is also dark; dissonant tones occasionally breaking the reverie of the nostalgic samples and loops, but ultimately a sense of positivity triumphs. Outlook for the Future takes from the past but doesn’t live in it, instead using that archive of sounds to create a very modern piece of music.

You can catch up with Inventions over on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Outlook for the Future is also streaming on most major services, including Bandcamp, where the album is already up for pre-order. This includes a vinyl edition in pearlescent bronze, which is limited to 500 copies.
