New Music: Syd Silvair – The Moth

Syd Silvair’s music will have a ring of familiarity, as it has been featured on programmes such as Grey’s Anatomy, The Fosters, and Bold Type over the years. Listen to The Moth below, and you’ll know why she is such a soundtrack favourite.

60s rock and 70s-influenced AOR are to the fore here, with the work of legends like Fleetwood Mac and Still Corners coming to mind. Silvair’s voice has echoes of Lana Del Rey, but with more of human touch, exuding warmth and intimacy where LDR goes for the grand gesture. Where others would go for a cinematic style, The Moth feels more like a home movie, grainy, full of sun-bleached memories, and laden with emotion.

Silvair explains the “The nurturing aspects of femininity are often misunderstood; the ability to nurture should be treated as a strength, not an obligation. I find that my own feminine nature tends to attract people who are looking to take advantage of it. I’ve connected deeply with The Magician tarot card in an effort to take the power back, to nurture on my own terms.

I wrote The Moth as both a warning for anyone who believes a woman exists solely to mend their pain, and more importantly, as an anthem of empowerment—a reminder that for every bit of our tenderness, there is an equally potent fierceness.”
