New Music: Dash Hutton – Headed Nowhere
Dash Hutton grew up in Laurel Canyon (his father is a member of Three Dog Night!), and has toured with the like of Weyes Blood, played drums for Haim, and is one half of The Great Southern. His solo music sees him mine a similarly eclectic range of influences and experiences, as you can witness on Headed Nowhere.
The song, which features on his Canyon Hut Sessions releases, does have a distinct 60s/70s rock aesthetic at times, with the vocals especially carrying a resonance of John Lennon. The strings and country undertones invite comparisons to Gram Parson, but it’s all framed within a very contemporary lyrical theme. The song is no mere excursion in nostalgia, but a vibrant, living piece of music.
Dash says about the subject matter of the lyrics, “Headed Nowhere is a story inspired by a friend of mine told from the perspective of someone suffering from addiction —feeling lost and trying to find your way back home. But at the same time, somewhere in the writing process it hit me that I was also talking about myself, as if I was looking in the mirror. It’s about compassion, empathy, and keeping our eyes on the light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how dark it gets.”
