New Music: Avery Friedman – You Move

Avery Friedman makes her move by releasing a new single ahead of a string of European live dates.

2025’s New Thing album quickly established Brooklyn-based Friedman as a unique voice, and she builds on the sound of her debut here. You Move is a great example of what is becoming her signature style: emotionally intense lyrics that come from her own experiences are given an air of universality and relatability by her folkish and friendly delivery, accompanied by often-dreamlike indie arrangements.

With You Move, Friedman captures some of the moments of ecstasy and joy as feelings for another person bloom. Something as simple as shared as gardening, or just seeing them be, become an almost divine experience, as if – like the summery and earthy arrangement here – your life is showered by sunbeams and the warmth of the soil between your fingers.

“You Move is about savoring the unexpected fruits that reveal themselves amid times of uprootedness, states Frideman. “It is a song about putting trust in the glimmer of new love, and carefully sowing the seeds for it to sustain.”

“Both thematically and sonically, it’s about searching, surrendering and allowing yourself to relish. My hope is that You Move invites people into the world of my soon-to-be-finished sophomore album – a world that encompasses a full-swing of emotionality, and lets loss and pleasure dance together. I’m so excited to share the song and video ahead of my first-ever UK and EU shows.”

You Move is out now on Audio Antihero, and streaming on Bandcamp, where you can also find some of the last remaining vinyl copies of New Thing. The song is accompanied by a very clever and fun video, which is well worth a watch or two.

Friedman’s European dates include a slot at the legendary Paradiso in Amsterdam, plus UK gigs in Sheffield, London, and York. Check out her Instagram, TikTok, and BlueSky, socials for ticket info.
