New Music: We Demand Parachutes – 29
Pop-punk isn’t a genre that’s given enough attention for the way it can address sensitive subjects. Boston/Brooklyn trio We Demand Parachutes tackle that perception head-on with the revelatory 29.
Pop-punk is a long-standing genre, and it can be hard to play around with a formula than has proven itself to be robust and resilient over the decades. But 29 sees We Demand Parachutes do just that.
The guitars have an added crunchiness to them, hinting at a darker edge than we normally expect. The lyrics carry a raw and reflective message, documenting how life doesn’t seem to change as we get older. 29 is about aging causing us to reconsider our plans and how others view us, a heartfelt message brought to life by vocalist Kevin McCord’s emotion-laden performance.

Says McCord, “29 is a song about coping with mental health… there was a general feeling for all of us in We Demand Parachutes at that time that the traditional metrics of success didn’t define our current positions in life. 29 addresses the anxiety and dread associated with obsessing with everyone’s expectations of who you are.”
