New Music: Elita – It’s a Joke

Newfoundland trio Elita revel in 90s alt.rock on the on the witty and incredibly cool It’s a Joke. Though it dips its toes into shoegaze, the reverberating and raucous guitar and complex moods of the vocals give off a Pixies meet Nirvana energy that it is pointless resisting. A whole album of music like this is going to be a highlight of my music year.

It’s a Joke has an unusual genesis, reveals band members Tim and Elita, as two ideas came together to create one perfect song. Says Tim, “Johnny and I were trying to make a mock-rock version of Aqua. Elita’s soft and sarcastic vocals are a perfect fit for the song’s abrasiveness. My lyrics are about resisting intrusive thoughts.”

Elita: “For some reason ‘C’est une blague’ always pops in my head. Which means ‘It’s a joke’ in French. I think it came from learning it in school, but I always liked it. When I heard the instrumental, it was so harsh, so I thought it’d be funny to sing super soft in French. I just think people take things too seriously.”

It’s a Joke is out now and will feature on Elita’s DYSANIA album which comes out on the 22nd of March via Opposition. You can download it on Bandcamp and it’s also streaming on YouTube Music, Spotify, and Apple Music.
