New Music: Abby Johnson – The Durango Song

Based in Nashville, Tennessee, singer-songwriter Abby Johnson takes inspiration from that city’s multiple musical heritages on new single The Durango Song. A Muscle Shoals inspired brassy and fuzzy take on a soul/folk hybrid sound, it is Johnson’s electrifying yet intimate vocal performance that lets you know that you’re listening to something very special indeed.

Says Johnson about the experience of first sharing The Durango Song with producer Ryan Donoho, “I played it for him, and he told me to belt it. He transformed the way I thought about my singing voice and writing style. A sad little number about leaving town post-break up turned into an anthem.”

She adds, “From there, I found my footing as a songwriter. My sad songs weren’t as sad as I thought. I channeled Linda Ronstadt as much as I could. The result isn’t a Ronstadt impression, but an incorporation of her vocal approach into a newer, more lo-fi, folk-rock sound.”
