New Music: The Garrys – Cakewalk
Cakewalk is the first new music from siblings The Garrys since 2022’s Get Thee to a Nunnery. It’s also the first release where the three Maier sisters are joined by their brother Matthew on guitar.
On Cakewalk, The Garrys – the band is named after their father – play with the boundaries of dreampop and indie rock. The vocals feel almost spectral while the lead guitar shimmers over a slow-burning rhythm section, all adding to the feeling that this may be a song about love, but it’s not a love song.

The accompanying video is a treat in itself, feeling like an eerie and atmospheric crossover between 70s public access TV and 80s dating videos. You can just imagine it appearing on a commercial break during Late Night with the Devil.

Talking about the track, the band disclosed; “Cakewalk is the first song we’re releasing that was written by all four of us; lyrically, the track explores the nuggets of good advice we’ve all ignored, the existential discomfort of holding multiple truths, and the stoic relief of resignation to an indifferent universe,”
Cakewalk can be downloaded on Bandcamp, where you can also get your hands on vinyl and CD copies of Get Thee to a Nunnery. The band are currently on a short tour of the UK.
