New Music: Michelle Jia – Last Chance Camp

Toronto-based Indie-folk musician Michelle Jia describes her sound as being inspired by nature and her surroundings. Amazingly, the evocatively named Last Chance Camp of the title is a real place.

From that name, three words that make a simple but bold phrase, Jia has woven together something that not only captures the spirit of nature and our role in it, but it also leads her to contemplate love and our place in the world. Fans of First Aid Kit and Jessica Pratt will fall hard for this song.   

Says, Jia, “I wrote this song while on a road trip from California to Detroit. I was stopped at an RV park called Last Chance Camp in Cheyenne, Wyoming, when the song came to me as I was falling asleep. I almost didn’t write it down. But I did. I stepped up, over my friends, and locked myself in the tiny bathroom. I whisper-sung the melody that came to me and the next day I wrote out the rest of it, lyrics, chords and all.”

“This song for me is a classic indie folk tune, inspired by First Aid Kit foremost. It’s about longing for someone you never feel like you had your real love story with, the ‘one who got away,’ the person who always represents a possibility of true love.”
