New Music: Alejandra O’Leary – Stricken

Portland, Maine based singer and musician Alejandra O’Leary cites artists as diverse as The Velvet Underground and Liz Phair as influences on her sound. New single Stricken is far from retro, however.

The timeless indie-rock of Stricken certainly brings those artists to mind, as a Velvets-style guitar/violin style ambience in the arrangement is balanced out with folkish nuances and a warm yet clear vocal performance.

The emotional turmoil of the lyrics is given added impetus by the arrangement, alternating between warm, dissonant, and quiet moments as O’Leary sings of relationships at their most broken.

O’Leary is currently working on her seventh album. Stricken can also be heard on Apple Music, YouTube, and Spotify. To keep in touch with the artist, follow her on her Instagram page, or over at Bandcamp where you can also download Stricken.
