New Music: Knife Emoji – Doppelgang

There’s something deliciously askew with Knife Emoji, and I think that’s what attracted me to Dopplegang.

The visuals are from another age – lo-fi game graphics and a website that gives off hand-coded vibes and a real air of mystery. You’re left knowing as little about the band after looking at their socials as before.

All of which makes Dopplegang a pleasant shock. This is folk with some indie and a few rock overtones, and vocals that occasionally shift the Doppler-gang effect (sorry, not sorry) into dream pop terrain.

Oddly, the whole thing has a punk aesthetic to it – this is a band that’s doing what it wants, how it wants; you can take it or leave it. My advice is to take it – it’s a choice you won’t regret.

If you’re in the Minneapolis area, you can see Knife Emoji at 331 in the next few weeks – check out the band’s Facebook and Instagram pages for more info. Doppelgang can be streamed on YouTube Music and Spotify.
