New Music: Ruby Jones – Not Mine

The sometimes-psychedelic folk and Americana energy of Not Mine by Ruby Jones is pure listening pleasure.

Melbourne-based Jones hits a very 60s and 70s tone on the arrangement of Not Mine, that California-set sound where folk, rock, and country mixed and matched in bewildering combinations.

Jones sings of heartache, a moment in time where the realisation that someone does not belong to you in a way you hope, and the physical distance between you isn’t the only one. There are references to dreams, and that set me thinking of Roy Orbison’s In Dreams and how Blue Velvet completely changed its perception by many.

Maybe there is more to Not Mine that is immediately visible, as Jones sings of the astral plane, and maybe we need to uncover that in the lyrics; she may walk and talk in dreams, but what is left come morning time?
