New Music: A Very Special Episode – Suspirium

A welcome return to the blog for New York rockers A Very Special Episode and the sonic wall of joy that is Suspirium.

The first single from their upcoming EP, it epitomises what makes them such a very special (sorry, not sorry) band. They have an innate ability to create songs that are primal and cinematic, and that is certainly the case here.

Garage and psych with a vocal that borders on the gothic, Suspirium is like Swans doing a rock banger or Sunn O))) riding on a kosmische groove into oblivion.

Does it sound like either band? Not quite, but this is A Very Special Episode showing us how they approach alternative rock from new directions – sometimes gothic, often raw and melodic, and sometimes rapturously noisy. That middle section of the track is one I could put on a loop of its own and watch some grindhouse. Love it!
