New Music: Scatterchild – FRUSTRATOR
You initially expect FRUSTRATOR to take you somewhere post-punk and post-rock, and it does, until…
FRUSTRATOR sees Manchester’s Scatterchild explode sonically but within a tightly confined space. The band say that it’s “a song for rage, angst, tearing shit up, keying cars, trashing bedrooms…” and that is present in every second, every fibre of the track. It’s a wired and wiry slice of hardened noise, with a bit of Radiohead there, and in how it boxes up so much anger, disappointment, and disillusionment in the lyrics.
With vocals that are pitched to an alien-like degree and laden with pain, and lyrics that find a fine line between rage and rationality, it’s frightening in a way that can be hard to process, more so if you can see the past or present of loved ones in the scenes of emotional dislocation offered up to the listener, wounded and wounding in turn.
FRUSTRATOR is out now on Manchester label Bread Records. It’s streaming on Bandcamp and Spotify, where you can gear more of the band’s previous releases.
Scatterchild appear at Grafton Arms, Manchester, on the 6th of November, and The Good Mixer in London on the 12th of November.
