New Music: Breaches – Died Alone
There is something so arid and bleak, so unforgiving, about Died Alone that gives it an exacting, enticing beauty.
Died Alone is the opening track on the Seeds EP from Wellington/Pōneke, New Zealand, duo Breaches, and it takes liberally from both post-punk and gothic rock at their most primal and pitch-black, lyrically and emotionally.
You can hear the influence of Joy Division with the arrangement, slowed to a funereal pace, fizzing with hardness and reverb, so I’m not sure whether the track is a siren call, a black celebration, a warning – or a bold and bare statement of fact, even though the band has described the track as being about surviving others. It’s certainly the darkest, most stark track on the EP, which is out now and features previous singles Valentine and title track Seeds.

It can be downloaded on Bandcamp and can be heard on SoundCloud, Spotify, and YouTube Music. Breaches team up with DJ TV DiSKO for an evening of post-punk on the 9th of May – head to the band’s TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram feeds for more info.
