The sublime sound of Feeling Forever by Vancouver dreampop maestros SUGARFUNGUS will go down a treat with fans of Men I Trust, Still Corners, ViVii, and Cannons. The band kindly told us more about the song and explored some highlights from their back catalogue as part of our Five Tracks From series. They have excellent taste in music too!

Five Tracks From: SUGARFUNGUS

Our new single

Feeling Forever is our interpretation of a neo-psych tune that explores the age-old question of happiness and fulfilment. The essence of the song is a longing for something that seems just out of reach. Further, the song’s lyrics delve into the complexity of human emotion and the search for lasting contentment. We have quite a few tracks now that have similar introspective themes.

Feeling Forever by SUGARFUNGUS

The first track we released

Our first track was Ghosts back in 2021. We wrote and recorded this song in isolation at our homes in 2020 during COVID. We’d send each other demos and stems of recordings ultimately for our drummer Ivan to produce, mix and master this song.

The song is about a person who is at a party but feeling isolated and disconnected despite their friends, who are in another room having a good time. The person is talking to a dog and drinking in the corner, possibly as a coping mechanism. The person expresses a desire for things to be different in their life and has a sense of being haunted by the past. The theme of the song could be loneliness or feeling out of place in a social setting.

Our favourite track of our own

For this one we’ll go with Retrospect. So far, it’s our most popular song and it’s always fun to play live. We were so thrilled when it was placed on Spotify’s Fresh Finds in 2021. That was huge for us.

A song that gets you singing and dancing

Marco FaraoneXGreeko – Armaghetton (Aeroplane Extended Remix). If I’m DJing a party, I’m definitely throwing this track in the mix. I mean the groove is just so infectious and chanting “Dance baby dance feel that rhythm in your pants” is just fun.

A song we wish we had written

We’re going to go with a throwback, In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel. We’re all huge fans of this era of art pop/prog music and you can probably hear its influence in our music. The song just has everything we look for: emotive and powerful lyrics, upbeat and catchy melody, and the way that it creates a sense of longing and emotion that resonates with the listener.
