New Music: Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys – Risk
Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys’ new album Teen Tapes (for performing your own stunts) has some dark twists and turns both musically and lyrically. Risk from the LP is perfect example of that highly personalised, profoundly primal sound.
The song, which features on the third and final album in the bands’ ‘tapes’ series feels infused with the spirit of Berlin. Brecht, Bowie, and Bargeld haunt the sharp, sawing arrangement and bleakly personal lyrics. But Kruger’s vocals breathe light and life into the song, a haunting but incredibly human presence amid the concrete tones and engaging yet funereal tempo.
Talking about the song, and her lyrics in general Kruger says. “There is more pressure on a woman to figure herself out in private and then step out with a formed identity. It’s suffocating. How are we supposed to discover who we are if we are not allowed to make a mess? To leak, spill, sweat, spit, shriek. Sometimes playing involves getting scratched or wounded. Laughing. Weeping. It also involves glorious thrill and the chance to surrender. I’m looking for that. I do not know how to write without making it personal, and for now I do not wish to.”
Teen Tapes (for performing your own stunts) can be downloaded on Bandcamp, while you can stream the LP on Spotify and Apple Music. Head over to the band’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts for further listening options.
