New Music: Mallrat – UFO (feat. Allday)

Mallrat’s spiky take on pop-rap has seen her gain increasing attention and plaudits over the last year or so, something that’s sure to continue with the new video for UFO, which features Allday.

The track, which features on her In the Sky EP, is a perfect example of her signature rap style. Languid and reflective, based in life experiences which range from the ordinary to the nihilistic, as her dexterous lyrics joust with swirling synths and chilled beats to deliver a sound that is both affecting and challenging.

A strength of the track, if not the whole EP is the way it seeks out musical influences from outside the usual rap sources – chillwave, pop and indie are all thrown in to the mix to create a sound and style that manages to be both accessible and hardcore.
