New Yorkers Me Not You wrote Imagine That in a period of reflection after the recent school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas. They will be donating 100% of the revenue – streaming, downloads, etc – from the song to March for our Lives.
They portray the song as their effort to try put in to words and music what they would have said to the perpetrators of such atrocities – a way to reach out to them, the change their path if possible.
Lyrics that come straight from the heart convey an earnest message, one that maybe we all need to hear at times.
The band’s moving and subtle arrangement builds in tune with the increasingly emotional lyrics and darker tones, turning away from the shoegaze genre’s tradition of looking inwards for meaning and resolution.
We all have our own way of dealing with the aftermath of senseless acts, and in Imagine That Me Not You have found a beautiful if stark way to do so.
