New Music: Missing Words – Hollow

Missing Words is a synthpop trio from Long Beach in California, and the musical outlet for main songwriter James Meays. Hot on the heels of their debut album Moment To Moment, the band have dropped New Wave gem Hollow.

They say Hollow is a song about feeling trapped in daily mundane routines and searching for inspiration, but there’s nothing ordinary about the song. There are fewer Italo and synthpop influences when compared to previous tracks, but that 80s pop sound still permeates Hollow. Though it has a solid electronic foundation, guitars are more to the fore here, creating a sound that has shades of Drab Majesty and The Frozen Autumn. Where those bands go for a glacial, daydreaming sound, there’s a brightness and clarity present here, especially in the vocals, that give it emotional depth and weight.
